Professional Portrait Update | Gretchen Elaine Photography Professional Headshots
The need for new professional portraits is never ending with some many people switching careers or just in need of an update for their online presence.
I wanted to go over some helpful information for those thinking about booking a session soon and how to prepare!
Finding an outfit (or two!)
For the women, I recommend a nice blouse with a jacket over top if you like the layered look.
If you opt for no jacket, make sure your shirt has sleeves! Without sleeves, the cropping can look funny and it makes the portrait a little too casual.
For the men, a classic suit and tie or dress shirt with sports coat is always a great look. Be careful when choosing your tie or dress shirt to make sure they aren’t busy patterns like stripes or small checker patterns.
Avoid busy patterns to make sure the focus is on you! Some patterns can be very distracting and cause something called a moire effect through the camera lens. (example is at the top right)

You can always bring in a couple possible outfits and I can help you navigate which one may work best!
Make Up & Jewelry
I like to say keep it natural and look like yourself everyday. Your professional portrait session is not the best time to try out a brand new look.
With jewelry, I suggest small (not distracting pieces) or even a statment piece necklace can work too. Don’t go overboard with jewelry; the photo is about you!
Cropping Photos
I generally crop the images closer to mid-chest and above to keep the focus on you!
If you employer needs a specific size image or cropping, please let me know and I can make sure you have what you need!
Attitude
Lastly, bring along a good attitude! I know not everyone loves their photos taken, but I try to keep it as quick and painless as possible!
Having a good attitude will make a huge difference in your portraits as well :)
Below I have a few photos from the last several professional portrait sessions over the last couple months. Enjoy and happy planning!
